The Midwestern Higher Education Compact (MHEC) chartered The Workshop as a non-profit in July 1999. MHEC's ten member states had just completed an 18-month inquiry revealing the difficulties of their colleges and universities to integrate computer-mediated instructional (CMI) materials into their teaching practices. The inquiry found that only a very small handful of campus-based development groups had succeeded in producing a steady flow of pedagogically sophisticated materials. Furthermore, none were producing these materials in quantities able to support and sustain improvements in the collegiate teaching and learning practices.
The Distributed Learning Workshop is an independent 501(c) 3 entity. The Midwestern Higher Education Compact continues to support the Workshop efforts.
The Workshop represents a focused, comprehensive and strategic effort to bring about significant, sustainable improvements in the college teaching and learning enterprise. The Workshop is currently collaborating with institutions of Higher Education embarking on the new path of effectively developing and integrating high quality, comprehensive and pedagogically sophisticated CMI materials into their regular and academic programs. |
