The Workshop creates Web-based computer-mediated instructional (CMI) materials that are high quality, comprehensive and pedagogically sophisticated.
By high quality we mean instructional materials that are informed by the cumulative practice of expert instructors who have thought deeply about the material, social and organizational underpinnings of productive learning.
By comprehensive we mean instructional materials that incorporate the full array of disciplinary ideas, concepts, principles, problem solving strategies, heuristics and examples one would expect to find included in the best-organized college courses, and covered in the best-written college textbooks. Our aim is to ensure that our computer-mediated instructional settings make the relationships among the elements of exemplary textbooks and college courses apparent to students.
By pedagogically sophisticated we mean materials that incorporate the variety of learner-controlled inscriptions and multimedia objects made possible by the emerging generation of CMI materials' authoring languages. These inscriptional objects include dynamically interactive diagrams, figures maps, charts, tables, equations, specialized symbols and the like. The multimedia objects include easily searchable digital video accounts of pedagogically significant phenomena, including accounts reflecting the perspectives of typical instructors and their students.
The Workshop's Learning Environment delivers a unique and responsive educational experience. Students can work at their own paces, online or offline, with extensive resources, tools, and collaboration features always available.
The environment tracks student progress, evaluating the students' depth of learning and understanding throughout the learning process and offers dynamic personalized assessment and support.
